A BMW customer with a 6 speed M5 went to the dealer with a blown engine. BMW got the data from the DME and was able to see the owner missed a shift and over revved the engine. The highest recordable engine speed is 10,000 RPM and that was exceded by at least 1RMP so they denied the warranty claim, the customer paid $10k for an engine but got the labor warranteed. This happens all the time and is the reason for the proliferation of electro-hydrolic manual transmissions. This is why I love the pre 1996 Z, It's modern car but there is no OBDII. It's one of the last enthusiast cars that was ever made.
